Bloodfeast
I know James from the time when he played guitar in Black Prophecy. (Markus played drums in this band, and when he joined Autumn Clan, they split up. A month ago I've heard that Autumn Clan also split up... but that's another story). One day I met James at a Perishing Mankind gig and he asked me to make the artwork of "Heptagram", which at the time was the promo/demo of "Autophobia". I made it, and they got a deal with PH-Music. It's a new label of Phil Hauser, a very nice guy (he actually looks like Steve von Till of Neurosis) who supports the underground in Austria. He also signed a few other bands like Defiler and Rohstoff, and this is only the beginning, I hope...
I didn't know anything about their music until they gave me the promo, but I was really surprised and I hope they'll get at least the status of Pungent Stench some day... Bloodfeast released "Autophobia" on Oct the 10th and by the way, I was again the artwork designer. I asked Wolf, the leader, frontman and founder of Bloodfeast a few questions for you, enjoy:

Arcana Noctis: Salut! Tell me shortly about the history of Bloodfeast, how long does the band exist?

Wolf:
It's not so easy to tell it shortly... Bloodfeast was already formed in autumn 1997. we recorded our first demotape "Herr Der Herren" in the classic voc/guitar, guitar, bass, drums-line-up. Though the low musical knowledge (the mean age was 15) the title track is live still a bomb. Soon after that the guitarist left the band, now he aims at a career as a servant of God, I don't know exactly what it is. From that time Bloodfeast was a trio, we had the title for the youngest Death Metal band in Austria and recorded 1999 our second demo "Pain Machine". Soon after that the drummer left the band, and his follower made the mean age a lot higher. The demos "Orgasm Trough Torture" and "Dead But Dreaming" followed, and suddenly I was the only one left of the line-up. Gatti joined the band later as the new drummer and Ghandi is playing bass since then. After the legendary "Revelation Feast I" in 2003, James Blood joined the band as the second guitarist and then we started writing new songs... in an uncommon way. In autumn 2004 we entered the studio to record "Autophobia" which appeared a month ago on PH-Music. The homepage is unfortunately still only in German.

Arcana Noctis: What do you expect from the record deal?

Wolf:
Well, we know, it's only a small label that started not a long time ago, so we don't expect big tours and things like that. It's important to us that they distribute the CD (which is also only at the beginning) so our name will be known better. The rest will happen automatically...

Arcana Noctis: What are the lyrics about? I've noticed, they are not only fiction... What's your attitude to life?

Wolf:
Well, you can argue very long about the lyrics... Which one do you mean? Most of them (not all) have a story and are about "interesting personalities" and strong feelings. You can take the lyrics in different ways. You can take them as they are written or you can read between the lines and build your own opinion, which is certainly the better way. "Stop To Rot" for example is about a lonely guy who can't take that the relationship to his beloved wife fails slowy. They drift apart. The reason is that she is dead and starts to rot... :)
My attitude to life? That's complicated. I think I'm still searching for the perfect way to live...

Arcana Noctis: The lyrics to "Guardian Angel" are ethical, against the bad one, the murderer, while other are glorifying violence... Which side are you on, when you're watching a horror movie? Do you think mass murderers and their acts are fascinating or are you rather against them?

Wolf:
Hmmm... The lyrics to "Guardian Angel" are about a guardian angel (me) of a massmurderer, in the main. A little of his life, what made him be what he is, what made him running amok and what he feels. I try to understand the committers, why they do this, and what they feel when it's over and there's no turning back. I don't want to write plump lyrics about violence, I always try to put a level into them. Though they remain sick and brutal, but with a sense...
And to answer your horror movie question with a counterquestion: Do you know our song "Jason"?

Arcana Noctis: What can you say about the coming tracks? What can you do to make them variate? There are a lot of bands that record the same album over and over again...

Wolf:
It's hard to say something about the new material, I write intuitively. It's very probably that they are going to be more Black Metal and faster in general but it can also be the other way. Actually we will always play hard music and we're not gonna write a tearjerker all of a sudden. I'm not afraid of recording an album two times, cause each of our songs is different for itself and there is always a variety.

Arcana Noctis: Honestly: What type of music did you listened to, before you came to Metal? Name some bands that influenced you, no matter what type...

Wolf:
That's not simple.. I have to consult my diary, hahahaha... Definitely I heard a lot of Michael Jackson, I liked him very much, and today I still respect what he has done musically. We sure are influenced by all the stuff that is ringing in our ears the whole day long. At the beginning I was much influenced by Pungent Stench, but currently we try to find our own way, and I think we have found it.

Arcana Noctis: Finally you can tell the Arcana Noctis readers whatever you want.

Wolf:
Thanks for this interview, don't forget to visit our website, to leave a message, and order a CD:)

In blood, Wolf.

Arcana Noctis: Maybe there will be another interview in a few weeks (or months) to see what's new. 'Til then I wish you good luck!
